What’s this librarian stuff I keep mentioning?
I’m an academic librarian at Washington State University. (Please read Geography for sundry considerations if so inclined.)
Building websites is not an unusual thing for academic librarians to do. I've built a number of websites over the years, including one one featuring a database of articles on Bob Dylan. Some of it can be seen through the Wayback Machine.
I document and organize material. I’m not a completest. I don’t think it’s possible for one thing to find every piece of information, video, or picture. Such projects take themselves too seriously. That's not something you want to do with good music.
"Punch of a Friend: The Art of Duke Special" is half way between a serious chronicle, and a whimsical project. While providing some context to Duke Special's career, I hope to explore how the lines between time, genre, and art somehow blur in Duke Special's music. It all somehow flows to communicate some really fun, entertaining, emotional, thoughtful, music.
Me and Music
Music has had a big impact on my life. Though I took a few lessons in piano, I mostly enjoyed listening to it. When I was younger, I was into music from the 60s including Dylan, and the Beatles. In years since, I've explored a lot of different styles of music. I listen to a variety of things these days. Duke Special's music stands out to me for a number of reasons that I explore and explain throughout this site.
Over the last few years, I've studied and published on qualitative analysis methodology. Those exercises lend themselves well to a project like the "Punch of a Friend" website.
